The Year that Was: Shannon and Ian Rentsch win nine

What better way to cap off the year’s memories than celebrating the incredible ninth title of Shannon and Ian Rentsch.

It was almost the perfect season for the Rentsch duo, the pair claiming a clean sweep of the competition with three round wins and all but two sections throughout the year.

By their standards, the Rentschs had a slow start to the 2018 BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship, finishing fourth in the St George 399’s opening section.

The pair managed to climb the standings in the round’s next section to second outright, before finishing the third and final section in first and winning the round as a result.

From there, the #33 pro buggy dominated the competition, claiming perfect runs in both the iconic Tatts Finke Desert Race and the Hindmarsh Shire Rainbow Desert Enduro.

The pair led from start to finish in the Northern Territory and crossed the line in second in Victoria, only to be elevated to first once Mark Burrows had his 30 minute pit stop time added on.

“It couldn’t really get any better. It was almost perfect,” Rentsch said following the Rainbow win.

“Getting the three wins at each round was awesome. Hard to believe we have won nine (Championships) now.

“I’m starting to feel a bit old now. It’s good to see all the hard work over the years has paid off.”

It was a remarkable end to a brilliant season for Shannon and Ian Rentsch and with the same three rounds on the 2019 calendar, there is no reason to suggest why they couldn’t make it double digits.

The father-son team have won more than any other Australian title than anyone else in he history of the championship and they don’t look like stopping either.

This memorable moment is part of a special BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship series recapping an entertaining 2018 season.
