Haby ready for Pooncarie return

Aaron Haby is hopeful a good performance at this weekend’s Wentworth Shire Pooncarie Desert Dash can set the foundations for a BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) charge in 2024.

The talented South Australian has committed to the first two rounds of the 2024 season and intends to run at Loveday and Kalgoorlie should all go well at Finke and Pooncarie.

Making his way to New South Wales with his brother Carl, Haby was looking forward to completing some big races in 2024.

“We have definitely committed to Pooncarie and Finke this year as it suits our schedule, so we will go to each event and see how we go,” Haby said.

“It’s pretty cool to be able to commit to the AORC and do tracks that I love. I am at a point in my career where I want to do events that we enjoy – and Pooncarie is one of them.

“For us, it serves as good prep time for Finke and allows us to hang out and have fun – we did Pooncarie for a few years and we went okay.

“I have done Finke a few times, so I am doing it with my daughter this year for the experience.

“I always have confidence in myself, so I am feeling good for this weekend, but you never know. The car feels good, so if I can get a good run, then it’s going to be fun.”

One of the many pro buggy drivers entered in next week’s season opener, Haby is no stranger to AORC success, having dominated the Loveday 400 in 2022.

And while he could be considered as an event favourite, Haby was just excited to go up against the best in the country and his brother.

“The entry list is pretty good, and I reckon it’s going to be a tough event,” Haby added.

“When I was there last time, it was a fresh track, so it should be easier this time and one less thing I need to worry about.

“Driving with Carl brings a bit more excitement to our team. We love racing together and trying to beat each other – so regardless of what happens, I’ll be looking forward to trying to beat Carl.

“In fact, it doesn’t matter where we finish – as long as we finish ahead of him.”
