Australian motorsport legend Craig Lowndes has confirmed he will contest this year’s Tatts Finke Desert Race.
The three-time Supercars champion will race the iconic Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) event in a Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Off-Road Racer and have experienced navigator Dale Moscatt alongside.
With more than 100 wins in Australia’s premier racing category in a full-time career spanning more than two-decades, Lowndes is considered one of the most popular figures in the Australian motorsport scene.
A seven-time winner of the famous Bathurst 1000, Lowndes was looking forward to competing in off road’s most prestigious race.
“I’m thrilled to be taking the Silverado to Finke. It’s been a while since I won the Australian Safari, which was way back in 2010, this is going to be a great test,” Lowndes said.
“I drive a Silverado ZR2 every day and regularly put it through its paces off-road on weekends, as well as towing our caravan yearly to the Bathurst 1000. It covers impressive distances and handles Australian conditions so easily, now we’re out to prove its off-road capability.”
Lowndes’ opportunity to race Finke will be made possible via a collaboration between Chevrolet Racing, the motorsport arm of General Motors Australia and New Zealand, and GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV).
The Off-Road Racer concept was built at the Chevrolet Racing’s Port Melbourne headquarters, with competition partner Rampex to help support the team at the race.
Based on a Chevrolet Silverado ZR2, the organisation hopes the off road concept will showcase the all-round capability and of the road car.
Lowndes is one of the first big names to enter the Tatts Finke Desert Race, with entries for the event now open.
